Manali is aresort townnestled in the mountains of theIndianstateofHimachal Pradeshnear the northern end of theKulluValley in theBeas RiverValley. It is located in theKulludistrict, about 270km (168mi) north of the state capital,Shimla, 309km (192 miles) north east ofChandigarhand 544km (338 miles) northeast ofDelhi, the national capital. The small town, with a population of 8,096,[1]is the beginning of an ancienttrade routetoLadakhand from there over theKarakoram Passon toYarkandandKhotanin theTarim Basin. It is a popular tourist destination and serves as the gateway toLahaul and Spiti districtas well asLeh.

Manali features asubtropical highland climate( Cfb ) with warm summers, relatively cold winters and a highdiurnal temperature variation. The temperatures ranges from 7C (19F) to 30C (86F) over the year with the hottest day crossing 30C (86F) and the coldest day going below 7C (19F). The average temperature during summer is between 10C (50F) to 30C (86F), and between 7C (19F) to 15C (59F) in the winter.

Monthly precipitation varies between 31mm (1.2in) in November and 217mm (8.5in) in July. On average, some 45mm (1.8in) of precipitation is received during winter and spring months, increasing to some 115mm (4.5in) in summer as the monsoon approaches. The average total annual precipitation is 1,363mm (53.7in). Manali experiences snowfall predominantly between December and beginning of March.
