Stepwell House

Each of Stepwell House's suites boast front row seats of one of Jodhpur's most lively attractions. Built in the 1740s,Toorji Ka Jhalra, or Toorjis Stepwell as it's colloquially known, was a popular meeting place for the inhabitants of the Old City. Back then, it was visited mostly by women, collecting water for the home.It provided respite from the midday heat and a place to go and exchange gossip. Fast forward to 2016, and Toorji Ka Jhalra lay in a state of almost disrepair. Unmaintained, filled with rubbish, this once bustling corner of Jodhpur had seen better days. FollowingThe JDH Project's renovation, the stepwell's recent drainage, has uncovered intricate carvings of dancing elephants, medieval lions and cow water-spouts, as well as niches housing deities long gone. Today, you're more likely to see children (and men old enough to know better!) diving into its cooling waters: a sight to behold and a great photo opportunity. Formerly a family-run haveli,Stepwell House was acquired as part of the Toorjis Stepwell regeneration project. Renovated in 2018,it now offers 15 rooms, all with ensuite bathrooms, providing guests with an excellently priced, excellently located stay in Jodhpur. Moments from some of the Old Town's most famed landmarks, Ghanta Ghar (the clocktower) and Sadar Market, it boasts unobstructed views of Mehrangarh Fort, and you're a stone's throw from the best shops and cafs in town.
